Art on the Road

By Aaron Beane

As Gallery Assistant at Portraits, Inc. one of my roles is managing all painting samples. Recently this responsibility led me to take a weeklong journey up the east coast to deliver and pick up samples from our sales associates and artists. The drive entailed a roundtrip journey to Woodbury, Connecticut, and back to our Birmingham, AL headquarters. Along the way, we made stops in Atlanta, Asheville, Washington D.C., and New York City to name a few.

These 50+ hours of driving allowed me to not only see the beauty of communities, but also the creativity and heart that our artists and associates share for what they do. I encourage everyone to go on an art road trip. Here are some tips to make sure your trip goes the distance!

Where and How

Before we get to the fun stuff, it is important to consider what you want to see and how you plan to get there. This includes researching accommodations, reaching out to artists and friends you may want to see, locating the hours and admission costs at museums/galleries/landmarks, and finding possible restaurants! The route you choose is important too! Try to avoid traffic when you can, and consider taking public transportation in larger cities if possible.

Pack!

Did I overpack or under pack? It’s always better to overpack a little than to do the alternative. Clothes and toiletries are essentials, but don’t forget to pack layers for the changing climate between destinations! Also, consider bringing a camera for all the beautiful art you see. I like to often have a small disposable camera with me, as it is very low commitment and super portable!

On our trip, we delivered painting samples to Portraits, Inc. artists and associates.

We had quite a heavy load delivering samples to our artists and associates throughout the east coast. Despite this, we were able to get creative to fit our bags and even stabilize the art.

Hit the Road

The journey ahead can be tiring, so it is important to stay entertained and find time to relax and recharge. Listen to music, go on a walk at a rest stop, binge your favorite podcast/audiobook, or even call an old friend! It’s great to have a friend or family member on the trip to help pass the time in the car, but if you are on your own you can still enjoy several of these activities. Lastly, rest the nights before driving, as a safe trip is the most important thing.

See the Sights

Explore the museums, galleries, and landmarks you came to see. Take advantage of resources like guided tours, audio-visual informational devices, maps, and knowledgeable staff and locals. Also, don’t forget to see the beautiful architecture and outdoor landmarks in the surrounding area. It can be just as beautiful as the art inside!

I was able to see the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. This has been a longtime dream of mine, and it was great! We saw many cities and sights that I had never seen before, but one thing was constant wherever we went. Creativity!

Support Local

Do not be afraid to ask a local for suggestions on restaurants, sights to see, and even directions. When you can, visit the local galleries. This is a great place to find emerging talent from the area! Another great idea is to reach out to artists in the area before your trip to see if you can schedule a studio visit. This is a great way to see how artists work and hear about their art straight from the source.

Most artists would love visitors and welcome questions about their work and process. This is also an easy way to become a reoccurring patron and collector of an artist you admire. Build relationships with your favorite artists!
